Those tutors' views were already going out of date. I remember watching One Foot In The Past - one of the later series, I think (it ran 1993-2000) - and St Pancras was features on that.

They were particularly talking about the Midland Hotel, which at the time was run down and scheduled for demolition, though the campaign to save it was getting under way. I remember thinking how wonderful the hotel looked, even if a poor state, and hoping that it would be saved. A clip of the programme was shown in that recent programme of BBC4 about the Gilbert Scotts: it's worth checking out if you didn't see it Dan Cruickshank and the Family that built Gothic Britain. It's on iPlayer until Thur 12.20am, so you'll have to be quick.
