I still don't really understand how the Watcher 'worked'.
And it wasn't really an interim stage, it was a separate entity until it merged with the doctor during his regeneration.

As for Valeyard, wasn't he just a distillation of the Doctor's worst aspects? A faulty clone rather than a regeneration?
