A day early? I blame the leap year.

I don't think it's a day early. According to Wikipedia the spring equinox mostly falls on the 20th, and the autumn one on the 22nd/23rd. I'd have to actually count the number of days to be sure it's not just calendar weirdness, but I suspect it's going to be due to the fact that the Earth's orbit is slightly elliptical, and not perfectly circular.
