Post-apocalyptic Middlewood update

The phones came back on at some point overnight. Still no power, although the lights on in the distance seem to be creeping ever closer to Chez Rich.

Huge thanks to [livejournal.com profile] longhairedhippy and [livejournal.com profile] soul_rider for letting me use their fridge space and their shower, and feeding me stew and dumplings last night :o)

It was good to see so many people yesterday evening, but sad that it was because we were all refugees. I hope no one's suffered too much or had anything at home damaged. Let's hope for a dry day and for things to get back to normal again soon!

It's amazing what being deprived of internets and hot showers at home can do! ;-p

I wonder which of those had the highest priority in the refugees minds...?

It was more seeing the extra footage on the news last night and some actual evidence of proper floods. Up until then, I hadn't seen any. I've revised my opinion from "That's just the sort of flooding we get every year back where I grew up" to "That's the sort of flooding we might get every 5-10 years back where I grew up". But I've seen flooding enough times before to just shrug my shoulders and go "Meh" unless anyone I know has been affected.

I am sympathetic to those who have been individually affected (and I mean seriously affected - I'm not counting myself, having had nothing more than a prolonged power cut). But that doesn't change the fact that I still think this city in general is ill-prepared and a bit crap when it comes to dealing with any sort of weather.

While pretty close to the flooding at work, and being cut off for several hours the worst that I can say is that I've been inconvenienced by the flood and as such count myself as one of the lucky ones :)
