Wonderful animé weirdness
Sep. 28th, 2005 11:54 pmJust got back from seeing Howl's Moving Castle. And it was fan-bleedin'-tastic.
Okay, I tend to go a bit OTT when enthusing about films I really like, but Miyazaki has really outdone himself with this one. It's possibly not quite as good overall as Spirited Away, but it's certainly a lot more weird, funny and inventive (and that's saying something!).
I've read a few reviews that have slated it for the plot being too confusing. Sure, it forces you think a bit, and it's utterly bonkers, but I found that to be its biggest charm. I didn't have any problem following what was going on, and it was genuinely different from any other film out there (Well, except perhaps the rest of Studio Ghibli's work!). The only thing I found slightly disappointing was the ending, which came rather abruptly and made me think, "Oh, is that it?"
Everybody should see this film. In fact, now I really want to see the subtitled version, to see how it compares - although it won't have the terrific Billy Crystal to steal the show...
