rich_jacko: (ice drop)
As posted on that facebook, my Auntie Carolyn has very kindly nominated me for the MND ice bucket challenge, which half my extended family seem to be taking up at the moment.

I'll be honest. I'm not convinced by this craze and I don't think it's been properly thought through. From what I've seen in the media, there hasn't been nearly enough emphasis on the fundraising, which is supposed to be the main point. It should be possible to wring far more donations out of it than you'll get by following the official rules.

So here's the deal:

1) I will NOT be having a bucket of ice water dumped over my head in the next 24 hours.

2) I have just donated £50 to the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

3) I am already planning to have an open house party (Lego Movie!) at some yet to be determined date next month. If guests at that party can match my donation by raising at least another £50 for the MNDA between them on the day, I will endure the ice bucket there and then. And you can all watch and laugh. If not, I won't.

4) As a generosity incentive, whoever donates the most gets to pour the bucket and post the video online. Everyone ELSE who chips in gets their names put into a pot to nominate the next two victims...

Even if you have no interest in this nonsense, I encourage you to donate to a very worthwhile cause if you can.

Book meme

As discussed in the Blake last Friday:

List five books you have read which you think everyone should read. Your choices could be for any reason. They don't have to be your favourites. Maybe they really made you think, maybe they made you feel, or maybe they were just a cracking fun read.

Here's five I've picked out from my collection: )

What are your five? What other books should I definitely read?

Mmmmm...

I'm not doing the '100 days of good things' meme, but if I were, today's good thing would definitely be the Christmas lunch on offer at my office canteen - turkey, stuffing, a pig in blanket, roast spuds, sprouts and parsnips, gravy and cranberry sauce, followed by Christmas pud and custard, all for £3.60 (Ordinarily a main course plus pud would set me back nearly 6 quid). They even throw in a cracker :o)

Of course, this does mean I just want to go to sleep this afternoon rather than get back to work...

...I don't do memes. This is mainly to do with trying to stick to my New Year's Resolution of wasting less time on t'interwebs, and only partly to do with expecting no responses to the current craze other than [livejournal.com profile] soul_rider being envious of my GameCube.

So instead I'll ask something entirely different (Woo! Rebellious!): Is it really worth seeing film versions of books you've already read?

Vice-versa I can understand. The film can give you a taste for wanting to read the "proper" story. But to me, reading the book first and then watching the film is akin to enjoying a many-course meal at a fantastic restaurant and then going to McDonalds.

The upcoming film versions of His Dark Materials and The Time Traveller's Wife give me The Fear. I'm already avoiding the Harry Potter films and I'll probably do the same for these.

Actually, I've not got much to report at the moment.

Work is proving quite busy. I had two big meetings in London last week and I've got another one tomorrow - all of which are eating into the time I've got to do "proper" work, and they all seem to generate a huge list of action points with my name next to them. Still, I got my pay rise today, which makes me a whole £49.64 a month better off. Woo! I should make the most of this one, since Gordon Brown ("texture like sun") has decided to keep all public sector pay rises well below inflation from now on.

The small elite group of us down t'pub on Friday concluded there was nothing happening over the weekend just gone, and it did indeed turn out to be the case. I'm not really sure where the weekend went to. (Though I suppose reading 300+ pages of Eragon might have had something to do with it...)

Since my diary is looking similarly blank this coming weekend, I fancy a day at the movies (again!). How about spending Saturday watching Cars at 11:20, followed by lunch somewhere, then My Super Ex-Girlfriend at 15:40? Any takers? The times are only suggestions; I'm happy to move them if folks have other preferences.

There are still two outstanding quotes from last week's movies meme:

4) "If history has taught me anything, it's that you can kill anybody."
16) "I'll tell you something about your famous future: Every day I wake up, it's still the present. The same grimy, boring present. I don't think this 'future' thing exists."

11 down, 9 still to go.

And we're done :o)

Since it's still hot enough that "anyone not wearing 2,000,000 sunblock is gonna have a really bad day"*, I decided to spend a large chunk of my Sunday in a nice air-conditioned cinema.

First up was Superman Returns, which was so terminably dull I'm sticking my review behind this cut. )

To make up for this disappointment, I also saw Pirates 2: Tentacular Spectacular again. Yeah, I know it's got an equally over-indulgent running time, but at least Pirates manages to cram in enough action and plot contortions to fill that time properly. I spotted a few things I missed the first time around. Spoilers! )

Good selection of trailers:
- Cars is out this Friday - Anyone planning on going to see it at the weekend?
- Despite my better judgement, I can't help wanting to see My Super Ex-Girlfriend. It just looks fun :o)
- There was yet another new trailer for the legendary Snakes on a Plane (What is that, three now?). But I'm still none the wiser as to which tail belongs to which snake on the poster.

And finally...

Meme - nicked from everybody )

* No, guessing that one doesn't get you any bonus points!

Gotta love that floating castle/volcano/colourful dragons combo! I'd like to see the 6% of cranberries who can get past that! :oD

A Corrie ad on the way into work has the tagline, "Devastation Street".

Oh, and while I'm on Wikipedia, here's that thar birthday meme. )

Simply trawl through this lot and highlight:
- in bold the books you have read;
- in italics the books you read as a child (counting this as under 16);
- in bold and italics for books you have read as a child and read again as an adult;
- with underlines the books you want to read (I've been sparing with this, otherwise most of the list would be underlined!).

That list in full )
