...or, bits of my life according to my posts on Facebook, anyway!

9 January at 21:06:
Snow Nessie was 8 years ago! That was probably the last really big snow in Hillsborough. We need more!

17 January at 18:33:
The pavements were covered in slush this morning, so I wore my snow boots for the walk into work. I'd forgotten how cosy they are - toasty toes! :o)

26 January at 22:26:
A long day at work today, but I did get to go to the top of the Walkie-Talkie, which wasn't bad. :o)

29 January at 18:48:
"Problems" it's nice to have: I have a week's holiday I need to use up by the end of February. Any ideas for how I should spend it? Anyone got any exciting plans for half term or anything?

3 February at 12:29:
Hmm, I think the parkrun results must've got one token out of sync at some point this morning. I was faster than that, and there definitely wasn't 13 seconds between me and the guy just in front at the end. There wasn't 5 seconds between Dan and Bryony's photo finish either!
Ah well, it happens. It happened when I was on token duty too. Still a big thank you to all the volunteers!

Go Falcon Heavy! :oD

9 February at 23:15:
"Old Macdonald had a Farm" in the style of Tom Waits; "We're All Going on a Brexit Holiday"; a death metal version of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen"; "Smoke on the Water" played on cow bells - Bill Bailey, you brilliant, utter loon. A great evening's entertainment at City Hall. At times I was struggling to breathe! :oD

10 February at 10:43:
Yeeeah... I reckon I can do a half-marathon... Ran 17k this morning in about 1h25m (or 2 hours including breaks) - Concord parkrun plus the journey there and back. Pleased with that, but boy it was cold and wet though! Clearly a level of insanity going on here!

I am counting this weekend as a win.

There was the 3FS on Friday, quieter than usual, but still a good gathering (and preceded by dinner chez Nightingale and Ruby's masterful Roo-brie).

Saturday saw Hillsborough get the dreaded Leeds match out of the way for another year. With what looked like half of South Yorkshire police on the streets, it thankfully seemed to go without incident. I trekked over to Beighton during the day to see the Clarks and drop off presents for Bethany. Then in the evening I hosted what I think may have been my biggest film night yet - 25 guests (15 adults, 10 kids). All the food got eaten, a significant proportion of the Lego got played with, there were no fights, everyone semed to have a good time, and David Bowie was magnificent. We started at 4 and wound up about 11:30.

There was snow later on in the evening, which pretty much decided my plans for Sunday. Tidying up can wait! I hiked up to Bole Hill park where I met up with the Haynes and Chivers clans. We went sledging, built a snowman and had snowball fights, before retiring for a late pub lunch at the Ball. I'm off to roleplaying in a bit to round off a packed and very enjoyable weekend. :o)

This is going to be way too long for one post, so I'm going to do it in instalments :o)

It turns out the answer to my Zippleback question the other day was a big yes! Thank you to Ju, Paul and Jamie for coming out to play with me on Saturday afternoon! :o)

I tried out my new Yaktrax this morning on the walk into work. They're brilliant! After a while I started deliberately walking on the slippiest-looking patches of ice I could find - No problem! How have I not discovered these things before?

Sadly I didn't need them for my walk home. Is there much snow left up Crookes / Walkley way? It's all looking rather melted down here in the valley. :o(

If there is, I have one question for tomorrow:

"Do you wanna build a snowman Hideous Zippleback?" ;o)

Happy Year of the Slytherin, everyone! And thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ju_bear for organising an epic dim sum lunch for 19 at Wong Ting! :o)

It has been a good week for food - fish and chips at board games on Tuesday, Tropeiro for Lard Club on Wednesday, Chinese food on Thursday, dinner in the pub on Friday, lots of snackage and more takeaway yesterday at my Doctor Who evening (which was well attended and a success - Yay!), and now CNY.

The only slight let down was yet another promised snowpocalypse today which failed to materialise. What was this one, 'Snowmageddon 3: This Time It's Drizzle'???

Lion dance!

Snow!

SNOW!!! Good gusts of it, whirling around as I made my way home! :oD

May there be more tomorrow.

That is all.

Sorry it's taken me nearly a week to get around to writing this up. It's partly that I've been really busy since I came back, what with work, two trips to the cinema (more on the latter in my next post), helping the Chivers decorate their Christmas tree, Lard Club Christmas at Pepe's, Chinese food, and my work Christmas do at Pasta Bar, followed by a pub crawl up Ecclesall Road. It's also partly my reluctance to grapple with LJ's annoying new(ish) photo upload system. (Who'd have thought something on LJ would be less intuitive and easy to use than it's Facebook equivalent?)

Anywaaaay, here's what we got up to on holiday. )

All in all it was a great few days away. It was a shame so many people dropped out of the trip, but it was nice to spend time with the Chivers. The goblin and I got through a few more chapters of Harry Potter and a couple of games of Chrononauts. The bug merrily waved "See you later" to anyone he'd see, and then I taught him jazz hands... We fairly thoroughly explored two beautiful towns, I ticked another country that I've been too. Oh, and we had quite a bit of cake :o)

The view from my window this morning:
Sunrise panorama

I seem to be extremely busy of late. Partly this is because the run up to April is always busy at work (I put in an extra five hours last week, which is normal at the moment). Partly it's because I keep filling my evenings with fun stuff, like yummy Thai buffet with Lard Club at ChaoBaby, an experimental (and well-attended) FFS at The Ball, and seeing The Company's version of Maskerade. But it was also quite nice yesterday to just sit in my living room watching the snow fall.

So, who's up for going out to play in it today? :o)

EDIT: Met up with the Chiverses in the park. The Goblin and I christened the circular sledges. The Bug was unimpressed.

Happy Year of the Water Dragon to everyone!

I am going to celebrate with yummy, yummy food at Zing Vaa later :o)

I'm off to that London on Tuesday and Wednesday. Predictably, the Met Office say it's likely to snow here while I'm away. (By the way, that's a yellow warning of snow, not a warning of yellow... Oh, never mind.)

Overall I think I will look back on 2011 as a year in which I spent an awful lot of money, but spent it well. After a long, long wait I bought and furnished a house. I went on two enjoyable holidays (to Flamborough and to Cologne), had a fab party weekend away in Hartington, and made several visits to London.

In less-expensive news several friends had babies, I became a godfather, and my sister is expecting her third (and - she swears - final!) child. A close friend coped amazingly well with cancer. We discovered a great new Friday social venue in The Blake, and had several hiccups with the Walkley Cottage. Work was busy but mostly more of the same - no more promotions on the horizon for a while. I succumbed to the evils of Facebook but made up for it by also reading more books than usual. Movies were mostly good but Doctor Who was disappointing. Cake was not disappointing on many, many occasions. The weather was hot and sunny surprisingly often. There wasn't nearly enough snow.

My New Year's resolution is kind of dull - I'm aiming to get up earlier and get into work earlier on a regular basis. This will give me more time to play in the evenings, in theory at least!

Best wishes for 2012 everyone! :o)

Back from spending half a week in Cologne with the Chivers and Anne WINOLJ. In a nutshell, the first half of the holiday went very well, the second half not quite so well (Bloody Belgians!)

More details... )

I aim to go back, not just because we lost a day and missed out on some of the stuff we wanted to see, but also because in recent years I haven't had holidays abroad nearly as often as I used to and I'd like to get back into the habit. So where next year, and who's up for coming along? :o)

Hmmm, patches of snow on the ground at Kelham Island this morning, and presumably quite a bit more on higher ground given what was on some of the cars parked there.

Just watch, there'll be great drifts of the stuff next week while I'm away, and it'll all melt by the time I get back. As usual.
rich_jacko: (ice drop)
Well, that was unexpected...
rich_jacko: (penguin)
Now THAT'S more like it! :oD
rich_jacko: (younger)
......I knew I could count on you! Keep up the good work! :o)

Behind my advent calendar door today was the following unexpected message:

"10 sleeps until Christmas Day!"

This made me smile. And also slightly terrified me.

BTW, we're supposed to get heavy snow on Friday - Think there's any chance of a white Christmas??? :o)
