Wow, yesterday was a fantastically busy day - the best day I've had in ages!

An early start to get down to Endcliffe Park for the Round Sheffield Run - another local running staple I'd never done before. It was tough going - 19km of muddy, hilly, mostly trail running over 11 timed stages, plus a further ~5k of walking stages in-between. Very different to the road race events I'm used to, and I found the stop-start nature of it, plus the constant changes in gradient, much harder work. It was (mostly) good fun though, and the varied terrain and scenery kept it interesting. My official time was 1h45m31s for the running stages (placing me 316th of 1,409 runners), with a total time 2h49m46s. I'm pleased with that.

Good to see so many runners from our little group there - Dave, Andy, Liz, Jen and Jenny all took part, and we met up at the finish to celebrate with beer and medals :o)

After that, it was a quick dash home to shower and change, then back out again to Kommune for Becky's birthday celebration. Sadly the timing didn't allow for me to join the previous Laser Questing, but we had a good natter and much-needed food and (more) beer. Then an even shorter turnaround before my regular Sunday evening gaming. I was very tired by this point, so it was no wonder I came last in our game of The Great Wall - it was reasonably close though!

It's perhaps tempting fate, with a relatively unknown new covid variant now circulating, but I want to record how good it feels, now that social and entertainment events have been starting to get back to normal.

Friday pub socials are now happening two or more times a month, and we're getting a pretty good turnout. It's great to be able to relax and spend time with each other over drinks once again.

Just over a month ago, I went to see Tim Peake talk about his career at City Hall. Much of it was things I already new, but some of it was fresh (I'd never previously thought about the difficulty of getting to sleep in zero-g!), and there's nothing like the personal touch of having Major Tim talk through it all in person. It was basically the best PowerPoint presentation ever!

November saw two big birthday parties on consecutive weekends, for Cis and Liz's 50ths. I only paid a brief visit to Cis's, at Trippets Lounge Bar, but it was great to see so many people there and catch up with faces I'd not seen in a long while. Liz's do, at Walkley Community Centre, naturally featured an enormous buffet, as well as party games and dancing into the night (well, 11pm). I had a wonderful time.

Kids and bigger kids playing pass the parcel Liz blows out the candles Auntie Carey came equipped with party glasses as usual!

A week later, I went with Gillian down to Telford for Wales Comic Con. I'd never have spotted this was on if Gillian hadn't mentioned it to me, and I'm glad she did. We went to a Q&A talk with Doctors 5 through 8, and racked up a few autographs and photo shoots between us. There were a lot of cosplayers to admire too (We were ticking off Doctors). It was a good day out and fairly, if not entirely, successful - The organisation of the event left a lot to be desired and we had a long delay on the trains back. You can read Gillian's post here.

Q&A with the four Doctors Gillian with Dennis Lawson James Masters and me, auditioning for a buddy detective show

On Monday this week, I was back at City Hall for another space-themed show, this time Return of the Jedi in Concert - the film, up on a cinema screen, accompanied by a 70-piece live orchestra. It sounded fantastic, though at times I had to remind myself to pay attention to the live music, not just get lost in the film!

Return of the Jedi in Concert

This coming weekend will also see my final running event of the year, the Percy Pud 10k. This one is a bit of a Sheffield institution. I've never entered it before. The course is through familiar territory, but it'll be a different experience running it as part of a big event, with celebrations (and Christmas puds!) at the finish.

Looking further ahead, I remain hopeful for a much more fun festive season than last year.

A few years ago, I started a tradition of taking a day trip to some other city on my birthday, instead of going into work. After Peterborough, Liverpool and Carlisle, this year it was Leicester's turn - a city I've been through many times on the train but never properly visited. The weather was a bit patchy but mostly stayed dry. As days go, it was an odd mix of 15th century history and spaceships, spaceships, SPACESHIPS!

I first of all visited the Richard III centre. The displays are very well done (downstairs telling the story of the Wars of the Roses; upstairs telling how his bones were found and analysed), but it can't quite disguise the fact that they don't have any actual artefacts in there. Still, you get to see the dig site itself, with its holographic skeleton!

After that, I went over the road to the cathedral and saw his tomb, then next door to the Guildhall, which was an unexpected treat. It's a huge timber-framed building with many rooms and actual artefacts, plus a good café where I had pie for lunch :o)

In the afternoon, I wandered through the enormous Abbey Park (finding the abbey ruins, Cardinal Wolsey's grave and the Wolsey Chimney along the way) to the National Space Centre. It was deceptively big inside, with the exhibits each going back a long way. I saw spaceships, Apollo records, moon rock, ISS equipment and all sorts of other stuff. There were a few school parties but otherwise, being a weekday, I largely had the place to myself.

The centre closes at 4pm so I only had a couple of hours there (40 minutes of which were taken up by the planetarium show), which wasn't nearly long enough to see everything properly. I guess I'll just have to go back some time! There's also an old pumping station / industrial museum across the road from it, which looks like it's worth a visit too.

I caught the 5pm train and got back to Sheffield just in time to pop round to Blake Street (where there was Van Helsing cheesiness) before heading pubwards for the Third Friday Social. A good birthday all round! :o)

I will be having an open house party at my place on Saturday 20th May, from noon. There will be buffet.

It's not a significant birthday for me this May, but it is for Star Wars. The party will therefore roll into a movie evening from 4-5pm, when we will start watching a slightly different Star Wars trilogy: starting with Revenge of the Sith, then going on to Rogue One and finishing up with A New Hope.

Other May plans (so far):
  • Lego Brickfest event at Meadowhead School 10am-4pm on Sun 14th

  • Going to Liverpool to visit museums and stuff for my actual birthday on Wed 17th

  • Julius Caesar is on at The Crucible from 17th May to 10th June - anyone interested in going with me?

  • Edy and Rory's birthday celebrations on Sun 28th

Last week, I took a day trip to Peterborough for my birthday.

Why Peterborough? Mostly because I'm an architecture nerd and it's home to the only "A-list" English cathedral I'd not yet been to. Also because it's a place I'd been through many times on the train and never actually stopped at, so I thought I'd see what was there. For 16 quid return I could hardly complain, and it was a gloriously sunny day to go exploring a new town.

The cathedral is indeed impressive, from its uniquely bonkers West Front to the beautiful New Building at the back (Only in England could an extension dating back to 1496 be called "The New Building"!). Entry is free and photo permits cost £3. Katherine of Aragon is buried here, and so was Mary, Queen of Scots (briefly, until James I had her moved to Westminster Abbey). It also contains the 9th century Hedda Stone, commemorating that Horrible Histories favourite - Viking raids on monasteries, and a 13th century painted ceiling. The sunlight pouring in made the stonework glow. I love visiting places like this when it's sunny.

The town centre was very pleasant. The medieval market square has been pedestrianised and modern fountains have been added. I had a look around the city museum, which is pretty similar to every city museum up and down the country in containing a hodgepodge of artefacts from local history and pre-history. The building itself has quite an interesting history though. For a time it served as Peterborough's first hospital. It still contains a Victorian operating theatre in nearly original condition. Unfortunately, you're not allowed to take photos inside.

I also took a wander along the riverside. There's a heritage railway and a "Railworld" attraction, which I knew were closed that day, but I had a peek through the fence and a look around the station anyway. Then there was time for a relaxing pint in a nearby pub before heading back to the main station to catch my train home. A good day out. :o)

My first week of holiday, and my sister and three nieces have been up to visit.

They arrived Monday lunchtime, settled in and we went to play in the park for a bit before Carly and I went to get food from the chippie in the evening.

On Tuesday, since the girls are all water babies, we hit the fun pool at Hillsborough Leisure Centre. The slides were disappointing but otherwise much fun was had. We went to the shops in the afternoon, and suffered a major tantrum from Sophie, but otherwise it was a successful day.

Wednesday was a full day at the Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife and Falconry Centre, which I'd never been to before and was very impressed by. We met up with the Chivers there. It was a gloriously sunny day and there was lots to do.

On Thursday, Vick had arranged to meet her friend Cath at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, another place I'd never been to before. Fortunately the weather held in spire of the rain warnings. There was much running around and climbing trees. We got back late afternoon, I gave Lauren her birthday presents (Minions!), and then the Chivers popped around briefly to play.

Vick and the girls left after breakfast this morning. They didn't want to go. It's been a really enjoyable (and packed) week. Missing them all already!

A few photos from the weekend. While part of me would have liked to have investigated Tramlines, mostly I'm glad I avoided the crowds and had a pleasant walk around Derwent for Ed's birthday followed by a fun day indoors with Lego dinosaurs and my team of master builders. :o)

Sunday

I'll be having an open house this Sunday for my birthday, from 1pm 'till late.

The weather forecast is less than summery, so I think I'm going to nix the BBQ idea. This does mean there's a slim chance I might not end up with lots of leftovers from the party buffet for a change. Don't eat beforehand! ;o)

There's no particular theme or grand plan this year. Just come around and chill. Clearly a sign that I'm getting old.

Although there may be new Lego sets to build, so not that old.
rich_jacko: (younger)
Blimey, it's nearly May.

I will be doing the usual open house / barbeque-if-the-weather's-nice on my birthday, Sunday 17th May.

It seems Edy is doing the same thing the day before, so it should be a bumper weekend for parties (plus it's a 3SF that Friday). I will be providing party food, but feel free to bring any leftovers from the day before!

On the subject of "nearly May" and Friday socials, next Friday is 1st May and therefore the FFS. I'm aiming to be there early, from 5ish :o)

Calendar

Jun. 14th, 2014 03:23 pm
rich_jacko: (eclipse)
June feels a bit like the eye of the storm, caught between a very busy May and an insanely busy July. I was actually in work for five normal days this week, for heaven's sake!

There seemed to be fewer birthday parties last month than most Mays (owing to a lot of folk being away), but it was still packed. I went to an enjoyable picnic in the Botanical Gardens on May Day; had a fab day out in Ecclesall Woods involving den-building and stone-baked pizza for Edy's 40th; was introduced to Green City Coffee near work by Ed and Krissy; hosted a birthday barbecue (the first of the year) in a brief burst of summer weather; and went to see my folks for my eldest niece's birthday.

Dave with EPIC bike Den-building in Ecclesall Woods Ruby and I blowing out birthday candles 7 presents for the 7-year-old!

June might be less busy, but there has still been stuff going on. Lard Club finally made it to Smoke, the weather was glorious again for the FFS, there's the Gamers evening I'm hosting tonight, and I'll be going to a barbecue tomorrow.

Then it's on to July in a couple of weeks. At least two work trips to that London, Adam's barbecue, maybe watching the Tour de France pass through Sheffield, Ju's birthday cocktail do, Ed's birthday meal, Andy and Jacquie's charity barbecue (Let's hope for some sun with all these barbecues!), and finally a trip to Glasgow to watch the Commonwealth Games to round the month off. I think I'm going to need a couple of quiet weeks to prepare!

It's been a busy old time of late.

The week before last, I combined a work trip to London with a bit of sightseeing. )
Last weekend I went over to Andy and Jacquie's to help with their re-decorating (and to admire their Lego). Then this week just gone has been remarkably busy. Another trip to London on the Tuesday, though without any sightseeing this time.

I was out every evening - to Henry's for a work do on the Monday, board gaming on Tuesday, child-wrangling on Wednesday, then the Rotherham beer festival on Thursday, again with work. This festival is so much better than the Steel City one. Magna is a great location, the range of beer was amazing, and the live music - including a Madness tribute band - were fab.

Finally, Friday was the FFS, complete with Bryony's amazing bee cake!:

B with bee cake!

P.S. - No, I don't have a new computer yet. The old one seems to have made at least a temporary recovery. I have, needless to say, copied everything of importance off it and onto a memory stick... I still plan to get a new computer soon though, so thanks are still due for your advice on my previous post!

Weekend

Oct. 14th, 2013 08:09 pm

I tried to cram rather too much into the weekend just gone. Now I rather feel like I need another one, even if it is only Monday. Still, it was a good one despite the almost-constant rain :o)

On Saturday morning I went to the cinema to see Machete Kills. Own up, [livejournal.com profile] bonedancer and [livejournal.com profile] pharrap, you've been feeding scripts to Robert Rodriguez, haven't you? My suspicions were first raised by the spoof trailer beforehand for Machete Kills Again... In Space! and the film itself carried on in much the same vein: His partner murdered, wanted by the law, Machete is secretly recruited to save the US from nuclear armageddon. Armed with a Swiss army knife of a machete, he has just hours to capture the bad guy and smuggle him back across the US-Mexican border, with a gang of gun-toting prostitutes out for revenge and a shape-shifting mercenary on his tail. This is quite the silliest film I've seen in ages. I loved it.

After that, I sorted out my tickets to Off the Shelf, did the food shopping and did a quick bit of tidying before guests turned up for the Doctor Who evening. It was a fairly small gathering this time around, and we watched stories featuring the 8th and 9th Doctors. Two more to go before the anniversary!

On Sunday morning I went swimming, then in the afternoon I took Jamie for his birthday treat and (slightly early) present from me - a trip to the Lego shop in Meadowhell and his choice of purchase. While the staff there are very friendly, whoever stacks the shelves is both cunning and evil. Why else would the really expensive sets be at child height while the more affordable stuff sits higher up and out of sight? We were in the shop for an hour and had a good time and a thorough look around. We played with the Chima Speedorz (TM), built some mini-figures each to take home, and Jamie built the ships (TIE fighters, apparently!) and base in the photo. I was very impressed with the access hatch he built on the ground!

It took us an hour to get there and another hour to get back, so we were out rather longer than I expected. I made it back home just in time to head back out for roleplaying. However, once I got there, there was tea and later on we cracked open the damson liqueur I bought from Lindisfarne in the summer, so I did get to relax in the end! ;o)

A bear in a Lego shop!

Good thing: Went to the park yesterday for lunch for Ed's birthday picnic. This turned into sitting in the park reading in the afternoon, which turned into running around the playground with the Goblin and the Bug in the evening :o)

Bad thing: My fridge/freezer is playing up. Normally it keeps the fridge at about +5C and the freezer at about -20C. At the moment it only switches itself on when the fridge is about +20C and the freezer is +3C, cools them both down about 8C, then switches itself off again. I can't tell whether it's just struggling in the heat or is actually broken. Any ideas?

This weekend I have mostly been visiting the Nightingirls, spending a pleasant evening in The Blake, visiting Stainsby Mill, having a fantastic pub lunch at the Hardwick Inn, visiting Hardwick Halls (new and old), baking another batch of raspberry flapjacks, going to [livejournal.com profile] edy_'s birthday party, going swimming, doing food shopping, doing washing, watching the Sealed Knot re-enactment in the park, finishing the last few chapters of my book, and going to roleplaying.

I'm sure at some point I must've slept, but I don't remember it!
rich_jacko: (younger)
...in bed, while watching Tom Baker Doctor Who episodes projected onto my bedroom wall. Which, as it turns out, makes quite a good screen.

After that, I opened birthday cards and made flapjacks.

Very soon I will be going out and having Chinese food.

All in all, not a bad day :o)

Stock-take the morning after: I ended up with much less food than I started (Yay!), more beer, more Lego/psuedo-Lego, and only one broken glass (and that was by me!).
rich_jacko: (Indiana Jones)
...Drank beer, socialised, played games and watched movies, as it turns out :o)

Friday - FFS at the University Arms again for Ruby's birthday. There was much cake and many, many photos of cake.

Saturday - A real ale pub tour of Chesterfield for a colleague's "significant" birthday. We visited The Market, The Royal Oak, Spa Lane Vaults, The Rutland and The Chesterfield Arms, before heading back for a last drink in The Sheffield Tap.

Sunday - An early start for nerdery at my place. We played our shortest ever game of Arkham Horror - One of our party got devoured by the end of the first round; Nyarlathotep woke up by the end of the second; and we killed him by the end of the third. So we ended up playing the game twice more. We also indulged in simultaneous strawberries, chocolate cake, cream and mead. Mmmm...

Monday - One of these days I will remember that the cinema is always heaving with people on rainy bank holidays. Still, although it didn't go quite to plan I managed to see two very different, but both preposterous and fun films - Salmon Fishing in the Yemen and Avengers Assemble (again). In preparation for the latter I watched Thor again this morning, and then had to go and read [livejournal.com profile] bonedancer's brilliant version of it another time ;o)

I was quite impressed with the IMAX. They've made Screen 7 quite a bit bigger and moved it closer to the seats. The sound is impressively feel-it-through-your-seat rumbley without making your ears bleed. The 3D does fall apart a bit if you're too close to the screen. Four rows back probably wasn't far enough, but it was very full. Still, I got suitably blasted at that range.
rich_jacko: (piratical)
A very happy birthday to my godson, who turns 1 today. It really doesn't seem like a year ago since I was wrangling your sister while your parents were in the hospital for you to be born. In that time you've gone from being a teeny tiny baby to a big bundle of energy, always on the move and wanting to explore :o)

The Bug's 1st birthday

He was very sweet last week. When I called round, he charged at top speed (crawling, though the walking's nearly there!) across the living room to me and put his hand up, demanding a Bug hug. He also seemed to have a good party at the weekend, even if he slept through a lot of it!

Wednesday 29th February to Saturday 3rd March
Real ale festival at Magna. I'm going with folks from work on the Thursday. Anyone else up for it?

Friday 2nd March
FFS at the University Arms.

Wednesday 7th March
March Lard Club at Fazenda in Leeds - Hmmm, that's coming up fast. Can anyone give me a lift please?

Saturday 10th March
Next movie evening at mine. The theme will be "Jim Cameron Special Editions", with a rough schedule of:
- 5:00pm - Avatar: Special Edition
- 8:00pm - Terminator 2: Special Edition
- 10:30pm - Aliens: Special Edition
Those are in reverse order of release date and it also means the films get better as the night goes on (Oooh, possibly controversial. Discuss!)

Wednesday 2nd May
May Lard Club. I have no inspiration yet what I want to do for my birthday this year, but I may hijack this and suggest we go find Roberto's new place in Barnsley.

Monday 4th June
The Diamond Jubilee concert. The previous one for the Golden Jubilee was epic from what I saw on TV (Brian May on the roof of Buck House!), so I figured why not enter the draw for free tickets for this one. The only way to get tickets is through this draw, and I don't expect to get any, but what the heck. Anyone else entering?

Some unspecified date in the future
If I were to organise a holiday for a few days in Windsor at some point, would anyone be interested? I'd like to go to t'castle, and I have a burning need to go to Legoland (and could do with borrowing small children so I have the excuse). It would be either at Easter or, more likely, over the summer (but avoiding the Olympics). If you're interested, let me know your preferred dates.
