Remembering
Nov. 13th, 2005 11:07 amWar is dumb. It occurs when people in power act like misbehaving children, and decide either that they have to be the biggest bully in the playground, or that the only way to resolve their differences is by hitting one another.
When they do that on an international scale, thousands of people suffer the cost. It's tragic how many civilians lose their homes and their lives in the crossfire. Above all, today we must remember those who put themselves on the front line, preparing to sacrifice everything to defend the rest of us from the consequences of other people's idiotic mistakes. We owe them all the respect and gratitude it is possible to give. I can't even begin to imagine what it was like to go through what they did for us in past wars, and what they still do in conflicts around the globe today.
This Remembrance Sunday, the media are once again commenting on the ever-dwindling numbers of veterans from the two World Wars who are still with us. Whilst it is sad that there are so few of these amazing people left, who gave so much that we could be here and live as we do today, in a way it's a hopeful sign - It's been sixty years since mankind has done anything that stupid and terrible on such a scale. Long may that time continue.
But let us never forget.
