It's good. Very, very faithful to the comicgraphic novel, almost panel-by-panel perfect at times. It's clearly been put together by fans.
They've crammed most of the source material in, and what was left out felt necessarily cut to make it work as a film. It moves at a steady pace; none of it felt too rushed or too slow. I didn't look at my watch once, despite the 2hr40 running time. The episodic, patchy nature of the story came through at times, but mostly it hung together as a film pretty well.
Okay, so they've changed the grand finale slightly (no tentacles!), but the essence of it is still there.
The characters and the mood were spot on throughout. I liked that there were no A-list "stars" to overshadow who the Watchmen were. They've not tried to censor any of the sheer brutality, which I think is important to get the main message across: Actually, costumed "heroes" don't have an automatic right to the moral high ground, and you don't necessarily want them around......
Only two things annoyed me - Nixon's giant nose and Rorshach's constantly-flowing inkblot mask. Both were far too distracting whenever their characters were on screen. Rorshach's mask could have been done much better if it was subtly different every time the camera cut to him, but you never actually saw it change. Those are very minor gripes though.
Finally, I also have to say that there were some truly inspired song choices on the soundtrack!
At this rate, Alan Moore might even reconsider putting his name back on ;o)
