He's 6 at the start of the book, 12 at the end. But they couldn't show kids that age preparing for war and killing each other. (Any kids watching might get ideas!)
Ender's dad is meant to be Polish. "Wiggin" is the name the family adopted when they came to America. Their original surname was Wieczorek.
