Busy weekend

Went to
ju_bear's birthday meal on Friday at Mama Mia Pepe's, which was as fantastic as ever. Lots of people there and almost as many courses! (still feeling full)
Yesterday was mainly a day for silly entertainment:
I went to see Pirates with
grok_mctanys and
lord_mallory. It was fabulous and a bloody good laugh. Not as good as the first one, but how could it be? The characters were so well drawn last time, that there's not much left to expand on in this. The comedy is much more physical this time, rather than being in the dialogue, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. There are several laugh-out-loud bits, and the action set-pieces are brilliantly over-the-top. I especially like the way everyone has their own agenda, and you can't trust any of the characters not to turn on one another at any given moment. Piratical indeed. Lots of comparisons were drawn with Empire Strikes Back - it's a darker, more downbeat film, and ends on a very open cliffhanger that sets things up for Part 3. Roll on next summer! Yarr!
Say what you like about Russell T Davis's writing generally, but he does do the Daleks well :o) They were, as ever, a complete joy to hide behind the sofa from watch. Is it evil of me that I feel slightly let down that Rose didn't die in the end, after all the promises of killing her off? I rather wish Jackie had slapped her, after she quite casually sent her mum, dad and Mickey away, never to be seen again, but as soon as she has to put up them instead of the Doctor... Personally, I'd rather they cut the goodbyes shorter and gave us more time with the Daleks and Cybermen trash talking at each other instead :o)
Also went to
lilith_k's birthday party parley in the evening, which was good fun.
Today, it's off to
gothicgoverness and
talma's place for their housewarming, then straight on to roleplaying this evening. (I'll be knackered come Monday morning!)
