I went to see Pirates 3 last night. It was okay, but definitely the weakest in the series. To be blunt, it just seemed to be a bit far up its own arse for its own good. Too serious, too self-important and too "Look at me, I'm an epic-last-part-of-a-trilogy!" There were several laugh-out-loud moments, but fewer and further between than the previous two.

On the upside, any scene featuring Jack(s), Barbossa or Davy Jones is an absolute joy. They carry the film between them. It's good to see Jack back to being "the best pirate you've ever heard of", rather than a bumbling clown. I can't fault the battle scenes either. What's also still good is all the backstabbing, double-crossing and general untrustworthy piraticalness. You genuinely can't trust any of the characters not to betray the others at any time. The plot is marvellously convoluted - perhaps too much so at times. The writers seemed to know they had too many characters and subplots, so a handful get short-changed and killed off relatively early on.

Still, it all kept me entertained enough that I wasn't glancing at my watch much, despite the nearly 3-hour running time. And I dare say I'll be going to see it again before too long :o)

So Pirates 2 was the Matrix Reloaded and not Empire Strikes Back afterall...

always was going to be that way - for a start the second pirates film is total arse next to the first one :)

I'm not sure about that, but Pirates 3 is definitely the Return of the Jedi of the trilogy...

Except that the Matrix was really pretty good, and Pirates was really pretty meh.

So the overcomplicated, overindulged, box-ticking sequels were never going to be much cop.

3 hours!! I guess it means with cinema prices going up at least you get more time for your cash but it'd be better if they put intervals back in for films over 2 hours.

I know that someone had an interval for Spiderman 3 at a cinema near Leeds, or maybe Scunthorpe. I'm sure when I got to the see the extended of Lord of the Rings at the cinema they hadn't put an interval in for that!

Glad I'm not the only one who thought this.
Definitely think that 2&3 should've just been made as one film (virtually all the effects in 2 went on way too long). But hey, least I got to meet up with L again :-)
