Don Valley Stadium demolition (3 of 3)

I felt slightly ghoulish taking these photos yesterday, but thought the loss to the city and the short-sightedness of the council needed recording. I'm also sad for one of my industry tutors at university, who helped design the stadium.

October has been a fairly culture-intensive month, or at least the second half has.

First up was a theatre trip on the 16th to see The Company's hilarious tongue-in-cheek take on 'The Dunwich Horror'. The Company are always at their best when they do comedy, and this was no exception. So much so that I insisted roleplaying be abandoned the following Sunday so that we could play Arkham Horror instead.

Next on my calendar was the first of four Off the Shelf lectures I went to: Simon Singh revealing 'The Mathematical Secrets of the Simpsons'. This was an entertaining look at the Simpsons makers' mathematical backgrounds and many of the maths-based references and in-jokes that appear in the show. Plus taxi numbers in Futurama.

On the 23rd was my second theatre trip, to see 'The Winter's Tale' at the Crucible. This was a Shakespeare play I knew nothing about (apart from the immortal stage direction: "Exit, pursued by a bear"), so it was a thrill to watch all its many twists and turns and outright silliness.

The 24th was a day to learn more about local small industry and sample its wares, at the Steel City Beer Festival. Okay, that one's a bit of a stretch.

Then came a triple dose of local history with three Off the Shelf events on consecutive days:

Firstly, last Saturday I went to 'Sheffield in Tudor and Stuart Times' with David Templeman (from the Friends of Manor Lodge). This focussed on everyday life and lesser-known parts of the 17th Century town rather than just the more famous Sheffield Castle and Manor Lodge. I learned a lot, although from the audience I did feel as if I was in a WI meeting at times.

On Sunday I hiked up to the Cholera Monument (which I'd somehow never been to before, despite living in Sheffield for the last 17 years) for 'The Sheffield Ghost Walk' by Loose Theatre. It was a very windy day, especially up on Park Hill. This made it quite hard to hear the actors at times, but they struggled on valiantly and put in a convincing performance what life was like during the Cholera epidemic of 1832.

Finally, on Monday I went to see Roy Hattersley talk about 'The Devonshires'. The rest of the audience seemed better informed than me, but I certainly learned a lot about our local nobility and the parts they played in national history over the centuries. Despite his claim that, as an egalitarian socialist, he'd sooner be rid of the lot of them, Roy had an obvious affection for his subject and gave a very informal and fun lecture.

This evening I will be eating takeaway and watching Ghostbusters.

Weekend

I tried to cram rather too much into the weekend just gone. Now I rather feel like I need another one, even if it is only Monday. Still, it was a good one despite the almost-constant rain :o)

On Saturday morning I went to the cinema to see Machete Kills. Own up, [livejournal.com profile] bonedancer and [livejournal.com profile] pharrap, you've been feeding scripts to Robert Rodriguez, haven't you? My suspicions were first raised by the spoof trailer beforehand for Machete Kills Again... In Space! and the film itself carried on in much the same vein: His partner murdered, wanted by the law, Machete is secretly recruited to save the US from nuclear armageddon. Armed with a Swiss army knife of a machete, he has just hours to capture the bad guy and smuggle him back across the US-Mexican border, with a gang of gun-toting prostitutes out for revenge and a shape-shifting mercenary on his tail. This is quite the silliest film I've seen in ages. I loved it.

After that, I sorted out my tickets to Off the Shelf, did the food shopping and did a quick bit of tidying before guests turned up for the Doctor Who evening. It was a fairly small gathering this time around, and we watched stories featuring the 8th and 9th Doctors. Two more to go before the anniversary!

On Sunday morning I went swimming, then in the afternoon I took Jamie for his birthday treat and (slightly early) present from me - a trip to the Lego shop in Meadowhell and his choice of purchase. While the staff there are very friendly, whoever stacks the shelves is both cunning and evil. Why else would the really expensive sets be at child height while the more affordable stuff sits higher up and out of sight? We were in the shop for an hour and had a good time and a thorough look around. We played with the Chima Speedorz (TM), built some mini-figures each to take home, and Jamie built the ships (TIE fighters, apparently!) and base in the photo. I was very impressed with the access hatch he built on the ground!

It took us an hour to get there and another hour to get back, so we were out rather longer than I expected. I made it back home just in time to head back out for roleplaying. However, once I got there, there was tea and later on we cracked open the damson liqueur I bought from Lindisfarne in the summer, so I did get to relax in the end! ;o)

Tuesday: Every Black Day (West Street Live) - EBD's first Sheffield gig, which included a last-minute CD production line, plans for plushie badgers, Dave shouting out hello to the venue and getting lots of "Hi, Dave"s in return, and needing a bigger violin. Oh, and the music was pretty good too. Seriously, you guys were fantastic, and it was nice to finally hear the full set! Roll on the next gig in July!

Thursday: We Will Rock You (Sheffield Arena) - Last night I went with Krissy, Jacquie and Andy to see We Will Rock You. The story (such as it is) is a classic hero's journey mixed with up-to-the-minute satire on internet consumer culture. It's also surprisingly rude. Sort of a cross between 1984, The Matrix and Bill & Ted, with all the sophisticated decorum you'd expect from a Ben Elton show and all the subtle understatement you'd expect from a full blown Queen concert. It was bloody brilliant!

Mum and Dad came up to visit this weekend. I gave them a bit of a tour of Sheffield centre in the sun yesterday, which included watching IVFDF morris dancers outside City Hall and visiting the "Designed to Shine" exhibition in the Millennium Galleries. We had dinner out at the always wonderful Zing Vaa. Today we re-watched bits of the Olympic Opening Ceremony on the big screen before taking a leisurely stroll out to the Admiral Rodney and back for lunch. :o)

I've just met up with [livejournal.com profile] san_valentine, [livejournal.com profile] soul_rider and the Bug to catch a fleeting glance of Princess Anne as she drove by on her way to open the Exchange Brewery. Police outriders are cool.

We helpfully informed a slightly puzzled BBC Radio Sheffield reporter what was going on.
rich_jacko: (Torchwood)
I've added photos of Monday's Torch Relay to my "Olympics" album (an album which will never feature any actual sport). This post is slightly later than I intended to owing to an interesting incident which involved being without electricity for 40 hours and having the pavement inside my railings dug up to fix it.

The event in Hillsborough Park was good fun. Yes, it was a lot of waiting for five seconds of watching the Torch go by, but it was a real festival atmosphere and we got really lucky with the weather too. It was good to see so many of you there - [livejournal.com profile] san_valentine, [livejournal.com profile] clarestar, [livejournal.com profile] neil_h, [livejournal.com profile] ceehoss + squirrels, the Chivers, the Clarks, the Stothards, [livejournal.com profile] ju_bear and jamie_bear.

Afterwards, I headed into town to catch the end of the event in Barker's Pool. This was less fun but it was certainly an experience. I've never seen town so rammed. The crowd stretched all the way from City Hall back past the Town Hall, and I had to walk in most of a circle just to get in through an unblocked road. I missed the Torch arriving in the end, but I did see the urn burning and caught the end of the concert, plus a few of the Torchbearers hung around afterwards. I'm glad I went, but the Park was better.

My plan for next Monday is to:
  • take the afternoon off work;
  • go to the Hillsborough "Flame in the Park" event (The Torch arrives around 17:40);
  • head into town to catch the rest of the Barkers Pool event in the evening (The Torch arrives around 20:00).
Who else is going?

So, who's going to this tomorrow? What sort of time are you planning to be there?
rich_jacko: (Indiana Jones)
About a month ago I wrote to the Arts Council to bother them (in a polite way) about being scumbags and cutting Museums Sheffield's funding. After pestering them again, they have eventually sent me this reply:

which more or less says what you'd expect it to... )

It's irritatingly vague and non-committal about future funding, but I suppose at least it isn't an outright "No".

So, Sheffield CAMRA finally see sense and organise an autumn beer festival inside rather than in a freaking tent and... the weather's absolutely stunning. Typical.

Ah well, it did mean we actually had proper beer glasses rather than the plastics of the last few years.

I'm not really complaining - it was a good night in a good venue with plenty of very good beer. And leaving work at 3pm so we could go for Chinese buffet beforehand was definitely a good plan :o)

A word of warning to those going tomorrow - It did get very warm in there, and it'll be busier and warmer tomorrow. We bagged a table near the (open) fire exit doors, which made it bearable / pleasant. I suggest you do the same.

Oh crap, I have to get up to go to work in a few hours, don't I...?

There was a spectacular sky over the whole west side of Sheffield as I was walking home this evening, full of deep oranges and pinks and great billowing clouds. It was a shame I didn't have my camera with me. Did anyone take any photos?
rich_jacko: (Calcifer)
I think I got even wetter on the way home today than I did going to the pub last Friday. At least this time I could get properly dried, into my dressing gown, and help myself to as much tea and chocolate as I liked :o)

Half the roads were closed and there was virtually no public transport. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Much as I love this city, it's absolutely rubbish when it comes to coping with any sort of weather.

Today I finally got around to visiting the V&A exhibits at the Millennium Gallery. There's some quite terrifyingly valuable stuff in there. I was particularly impressed by the first millennium ivories (including possibly the world's most ostentatious book cover) and the wooden medieval St Christopher statue.

By contrast, the The da Vinci Forster Codex is very unassuming, but immensely cool. There's something spine-tingling about seeing the actual 500-year-old hand-written notes from the greatest geek of all time, and trying to interpret what he's saying about calculating the volume of a dodecahedron :o)

There's quite a bit of local heritage in the exhibition too, including letters and needlework by Mary Queen of Scots when she was in Sheffield castle.

If you haven't yet been, it's on for another two weeks. I definitely recommend checking it out if you get time.

On a more low-brow front, The Hunt for Gollum is a very impressive little film. The production values are amazing for an amateur fan-made effort. It's full of lingering scenery shots / foreboding mutterings / pointless Arwen interludes, and therefore it takes ages for anything to happen - just like the real thing! Worth a watch if you find yourself with a spare half hour to waste on the intertubes.

As I tried to mention in the pub last night before getting mocked - because apparently having lots of comics based on toy robots from 25 years ago doesn't make me the height of cool. Who'd have thought it? ;o) -

Steampunk Transformers!

Bumblebee - Shockwave - Starscream - Ravage

Speaking of being a great big nerd*, I've lost far too much of today playing about with Google Street View. It's a bit good, isn't it?

In case you're interested, I've worked out that the Google car must have been round Sheffield about the weekend of 23rd / 24th August last year, since the cooling towers are either still standing or a pile of rubble depending on which way you go down the viaduct.

Seeing the date of the next match outside the Wednesday ground was a bit of a clue as well.

* which I wasn't, of course

The rumours were true - The Moon has now re-opened. I popped in briefly on my way to the HH yesterday to investigate, and found the following:

- It's back to being The Office.
- There's now a pool table in the area to the right of the door as you go in.
- It's still pretty quiet.
- Doors to the back room were shut (not sure what that means).
- It still does food.

But, and here's the major downer, they only had branded rubbish on tap: Tetley, John Smith's, Stones, Guinness, Carlsberg and Kronenberg, if memory serves. I don't know whether they're planning on getting any proper beer real ales in later, but it looks a bit bleak for now :o(
rich_jacko: (eclipse)
I seemed to spend a good portion of the bank holiday weekend taking photos around Tinsley - before, during and after the big bang. Slightly obsessive perhaps, but it's not like an event like this happens very often in your home town.

Here's the full gallery (four pages).

Ooops! Looks like they missed a bit.

Do you think it says something about city centre redevelopment that it's getting hard to tell the difference between the blocks that are going up and the blocks that are coming down?

In other news, like most of you I got woken in the middle of the night by the planet having a bit of a tizzy fit. In fact, I must have 5up3r-l33t animal senses because I woke up a moment earlier and had time to look at my alarm clock and think "WTF am I doing awake at 1am???" before the roar sounded and the room started shaking.

In spite of that interruption, I had a good night's sleep and as a result I'm feeling rather less grim than I did this time yesterday.
