I've had a monstrously productive day at work today, earning a lot of brownie points from my team leader. The light is just starting to peek through the end of the tunnel at last. I managed to tick off a couple of "to do" items in my lunch break too :o)

For those joining in [livejournal.com profile] longhairedhippy's Castleton trip this weekend but worried about public transport (I'm thinking of [livejournal.com profile] morecake here), according to the timetable buses back run about once an hour all the way up 'till 23:20. If the weather's nice though, I'll probably be taking the train to/from Hope and doing the short walk between Hope and Castleton. (This is because buses are Teh Eeevil and make Rich travel-sick.) Trains from Sheffield to Hope are 15 minutes past the hour, every hour. Trains back are 4 minutes past the hour, every hour until 20:04 (with a last one at 22:04).

Work is being extremely demanding this week. So rather than complain about how knackered I am, I thought I'd give you all a random food poll instead :o)

Okay, Monday wasn't that busy - what with the sleeping in after getting back from the Lordi gig at 4 in the morning, followed by meeting [livejournal.com profile] soul_rider and Evie for lunch, catching up with Torchwood and very little else, but the rest of the week was kinda hectic.

It's been my first week on temporary promotion (see here), and Tuesday was spent frantically preparing for meetings in London, Wednesday and Thursday were spent in meetings in London, and Friday was spent catching up and actually sorting stuff out with the three EOs I've suddenly got working for me.

I have, however, eaten well. After a fruitless search for restaurants around Westminster on Wednesday evening (They don't exist), we decided, "Stuff this! We're going to Planet Hollywood!" which was as fab as ever. I also managed to get back to Sheffield on Thursday evening just in time for Chinese food :o)

Friday evening was an ex-colleague's 30th do, so I swapped a night's drinking down the NBT for a night's drinking down the Frog & Parrot. Saturday was a day for catching up on rest, and also carrying on with the German course I borrowed from work. (I'm understanding it all as I go through, but not much seems to be actually sinking in - I'm never going to learn it in time for the Christmas markets trip at the end of the month!) But apart from that, and discovering that Magical Trevor seems to have gone a bit HP Lovecraft, not much else.

Today is again going to be busy. Well, perhaps "busy" is the wrong word, since my plans involve going to Baan Thai for [livejournal.com profile] andymariachi's birthday meal, and then sitting in the Fat Cat for the rest of the afternoon while waiting for the fireworks to start :o)

Finally, has anyone seen [livejournal.com profile] goth_pooh_bear? He went to Whitby as he does every year, and has gone missing. Either some nasty heffalump (or woozel) has bearnapped him, or he's gone adventuring and got himself stuck in a rabbit hole again. He may be a bear of little brain, but he is deeply loved and the party scene just isn't the same without him.

Any info on his whereabouts to [livejournal.com profile] thegreatgonzo or [livejournal.com profile] thedarkfairy

Grrrrrr!

...to the colleague who ordered vegetarian-only food for our team event yesterday and then didn't turn up.

We reckon she was sat somewhere, in front of a pile of chicken legs and ham sandwiches, laughing maniacally at us all.

Today was a somewhat frustrating day at work (lots of stuff that can't be done until people send me stuff, or until senior managers/ministers give us the go ahead - grrr!) so I'm going to post about Sunday instead, which was a much better day :o)

Went swimming in the morning, and managed 50 lengths without feeling even remotely knackered. Yay!

Met up with [livejournal.com profile] soul_rider and Evie for lunch at the Fat Cat. The weather was glorious so the beer garden was packed, whilst the pub itself was completely empty. I fed Evie pie and played on the beer garden swing chair with her :o)

Went to see One Man Star Wars in the evening with a whole bundle of other people. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] kaickul for organising, even if I was rubbish at confirming. The pre-show crowds of Stormtroopers (plus Jango Fett and C-3PO) were almost better than the show!

The warm-up act was quite good. A little too reliant on unimaginative "everything is crap" humour for my tastes (Sunderland is crap; the North is crap; the South is crap; telly is crap; films are crap; DJs are crap; Star Wars fans are crap; hecklers are crap; the main act is a sad man with too much time on his hands; etc.), but he was amusing enough and he had his moments - such as the Yoda/benefit fraud gag ;o)

I've got to admire Charles Ross for his energy. Spending a whole hour jumping around the stage like a big kid, whether waving his arms around to impersonate X-wings, growling like Chewie or carrying out both sides of a conversation or lightsaber duel with himself. The genius was in the comic timing, but there were some great asides as well (such as his Yoda: "Much anger in him. Like his father. He was a whiner too.") :oD

Should I worry that I out-geeked him on one point? General Dodonna is not the only character to call Leia "Lee-ah"; Tarkin does it too. Tragic...

How is it that I can have had an absolute ton of work to do over the last two days, and yet suddenly find myself with bugger all to do today?

- Good news for "Plutons", with Ceres and Sharon Charon both seemingly in line for a promotion.

- The UK's unsung landmarks: Jodrell Bank I can understand, but the Tinsley cooling towers???

Good day

Managed to get an impressive amount done in work, not least helped by staying 'till 6:30. Which gives me an easier day tomorrow, and another hour's flexi owed to me.

Then Lard Club with [livejournal.com profile] grok_mctanys and [livejournal.com profile] edy_. It turns out the Irish Kitchen is only open lunchtimes, so we went to Rossi's instead. Which, as Adam said in his e-mail, is Italian and yummy.

Now feeling full and sleepy :o)

Actually, I've not got much to report at the moment.

Work is proving quite busy. I had two big meetings in London last week and I've got another one tomorrow - all of which are eating into the time I've got to do "proper" work, and they all seem to generate a huge list of action points with my name next to them. Still, I got my pay rise today, which makes me a whole £49.64 a month better off. Woo! I should make the most of this one, since Gordon Brown ("texture like sun") has decided to keep all public sector pay rises well below inflation from now on.

The small elite group of us down t'pub on Friday concluded there was nothing happening over the weekend just gone, and it did indeed turn out to be the case. I'm not really sure where the weekend went to. (Though I suppose reading 300+ pages of Eragon might have had something to do with it...)

Since my diary is looking similarly blank this coming weekend, I fancy a day at the movies (again!). How about spending Saturday watching Cars at 11:20, followed by lunch somewhere, then My Super Ex-Girlfriend at 15:40? Any takers? The times are only suggestions; I'm happy to move them if folks have other preferences.

There are still two outstanding quotes from last week's movies meme:

4) "If history has taught me anything, it's that you can kill anybody."
16) "I'll tell you something about your famous future: Every day I wake up, it's still the present. The same grimy, boring present. I don't think this 'future' thing exists."

Leaving work.

Not worth going home before Jacquie's meal.

Not meeting people in the pub until 7:25pm.

Boy, do I wish I'd brought a book with me...
rich_jacko: (Default)
The Park was a rather pleasant discovery on Sunday - I met up with the Chivers for lunch there. Whilst large bits of the roast dinners had a rather conspicuous sense of having come straight from a packet, for the price I can't complain. I could quite happily keep going back there at weekends until I've worked my way down the entire menu. The mixed grill for a fiver, and the 16oz steak for £6.50 both look very tempting :o)

Also huzzah for GameStation on The Moor - 2 DVDs, 2 ancient MegaDrive games and a shiny new GameCube game for the grand total of 21 quid! I was good and resisted the SNES-plus-twenty-games-for-£120 option...

I now have a date for moving teams (22nd May), which means I now have to organise myself a leaving do. Following my slight whinge about pub crawls with work here, I'm going to try to persuade my colleagues into going to Marble Court. Wish me luck!

Note to [livejournal.com profile] soul_rider: I managed to book your birthday off! (On the flimsy excuse that I ought to get my flexi back down again before I leave) So I'll be able to meet up with you guys in Hope like we said.

Waaah!

Weekend

Friday - Tiring but satisfying day at work. Various folks on leave/off sick, so I was in charge of the team. I'm pleased with my own l33t management SkillZ, as we cleared three times our normal workload, without stressing anyone out or pissing them off.

Big thumbs up for the NBT as the new venue for the Friday night social. Whilst space was a bit tight later on, the fact that they do food was a major bonus. As was the choice of good (and cheap!) beer.

Saturday - Somehow managed to sleep for nearly 12 hours, which made the morning rather short non-existant, but I guess I must have needed it.

Went to B's birthday party in the afternoon/evening (a bit later than intended!), which was fab! Great to see so many people there, many of whom I don't get to see very often. And the excuse to play with toys and watch Harry Potter DVDs was just an added bonus :o)

Sunday - Snow! I'd forgotten about the forecast. Went for a walk around the park in it at lunchtime (to burn off a bit more of the food from yesterday's party!). I'm now planning to spend the rest of the day being a lazy sci-fi geek, finishing reading my current Dune novel and watching Doctor Who DVDs.

Like most of the population, I have a strong dislike for Mondays. It being cold outside, no one would let me open the windows today to actually let some air into our stuffy office (Can't wait for the new building with its amazing non-opening windows!). Plus, this morning I was expected to be an expert, not only in immigration law and forgery detection, but also in contract law, employment law, accounting, and several different types of geek IT jobs. I then decided that they weren't paying me nearly enough for all this.

The conclusion that they're not paying me nearly enough for all this may or may not be entirely unrelated to the £300+ gas bill that I've just been stung for. Having been trying to convince the bastards npower for the last eight months to actually charge me for my heating, they've finally taken the hint. And charged me for my heating for the last eight months.

I am currently trying to decide whether or not taking every other Monday off work represents a viable use of my annual leave...

Friday - Night out with work to celebrate a colleague's promotion. The difference in Wetherspoons since they made it non-smoking is amazing. I was actually able to enjoy myself and not end up with a smoke-induced headache! [just a slight alcohol-induced one instead ;o)]

Saturday - Did dull-but-necessary chores like shopping and cleaning the flat. Goblin-sat for the first time in the evening, and went round to [livejournal.com profile] delanthear's party with her. The party was fun, and I was quite pleased that I managed to not make a complete mess of looking after teh Goblin [although she did show me up by being hot and waily just before [livejournal.com profile] soul_rider turned up - Cheers for that :op].

Sunday - Lazy day, mostly spent watching DVDs. The racoons were a bit too weird for me [Yeah, I know. It's a Japanese animation - What was I expecting? But it was weird even by their standard!], though the flying pig was a great movie and I'm thoroughly glad that I bought it.

At various points this weekend, I've managed to get caught up in t'interweb discussions about Those Danish Cartoons. I have got this right, haven't I? A handful of newspapers publishes a few cartoons in poor taste, and instead of writing to the editors like any sane person would do, a whole bunch of nutters start inciting genocide and burning embassies because of it? Talk about overreaction! It's a good job Mary Whitehouse never took that approach...

  • I find myself now working back on my old team, the one I left in September. This feels slightly odd, but not in a bad way.

  • Just when I though video games couldn't get any sillier, I get to play as a Lego Sith Lord with an oversize comedy 'tache, wielding a double-ended Broom o' Doom!!!

  • Demolishing a manky bus stop to build an equally grim one ranks as one of the most pointless things I've seen recently. You can tell it's getting near the end of the financial year.

  • Was I born out of time? I've really enjoyed both Life on Mars and Breakfast on Pluto, but mainly for the music and the complete and utter 70s-ness of them both :o) (Hmmm, interestingly connected titles, those two.)

  • I'm quite glad I didn't take up the offer of going to Charles Clarke's recent presentation on immigration and ID card - I may have got myself sacked/arrested/put on someone's database of troublemakers if I had...

  • Huzzah for the Coop and its squillions of BOGOFs! A £19.07 bill magically turns into £12.49! :o)

  • I love the person in our Policy Team who overruled several of my managers. I've never met her, but I now want to marry her, for letting me thoroughly nail one of my least favourite clients to the wall! :oD

  • Kicking out the England manager - possibly not the greatest booster just before the World Cup? I hope those whose bitching and backstabbing led to this accept some of the blame if we perform really abysmally in Germany.

  • So, if I won £100m, just how much would I have to give away to ease my conscience?

Wow, what a last day at work! :oO

Sixty-two bleedin' applications I had to deal with today (By contrast, on a normal day I only have to face about forty). And I had to manage the ship as far as the team goes and sort out various staff-related issues. Oh, yay and w00t. I was certainly ready for t'pub come 5pm . . .

Still, good fun was had at t'Hillsborough and (unexpectedly) there were plenty of people there. And a smiley Goblin :o)

I'm off daarn saaf again tomorrow to see family for Christmas, but I expect to be back up around the end of next week.

Have a good Christmas, everyone, and I hope to see most of you around New Year! In the meantime, here's the ability to create your very own Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Snow Goons to keep you amused :o)

Thursday - York with Gillian, [livejournal.com profile] soul_rider and Evie. Christmas markets quite cool. Weather bloody freezing. Mmmm, pig... Barley Hall hard to find. Medieval market worth finding it for. Borders lifts take ages. No snow.

Friday - More trains with [livejournal.com profile] soul_rider and Evie. Tonbridge this time. First Class generally wonderful. Out of cheeseburgers though. Train journeys about half an hour too long for Evie. Otherwise good as gold. Lugged masses of stuff across the Underground. Learnt how to attach car seat. Saw Helen and her mum for first time in ages. Bongo drums. No snow.

Saturday - Christmas: Round 1. What [livejournal.com profile] longhairedhippy said here. Painted dragon mug. Good food and drink. Even better company. Mountain of pressies. Many photos. Must remember to take round to Ed & Krissy's on Thursday. No snow.

Sunday - Woke up 6am. Violently sick five times. Temperature up and down like a yo-yo. Not good. Wasn't even alcohol-related. Much fresh air needed. Recovered slightly for long journey home. No snow.

Monday - Thought I was well enough to go to work. Made it in. Team meeting in which everyone moaned. Realised I was wrong at lunchtime. Went home. Missed training at work. Would have been useful for once too. Have to rearrange. SNOW!!!

Tuesday - Slept for 12 hours last night. Feeling much better. Managed whole day at work. Had to lead four staff meetings. Not exactly an easy first day back. Tired now. But still better. No snow.

Good week

My boss has been on leave this week, so I've had the fun of being Team Leader for the past three days.

[Palpatine]"Power!!! Unliiiiiimited POWER!!!"[/Palpatine]

...which has been nice. Plus the extra money'll go a small way towards making up for everything I've spent so far on Christmas pressies. And, er, that Doctor Who boxset ;o)

I've got the next two days off (W00t!), which is probably just as well, since all the people in the office seem to be coming down with colds. Hopefully I got out of there in the nick of time.

Tomorrow I'm off to the medieval markets in York with Gillian, [livejournal.com profile] soul_rider and Evie. Then on Friday I'm off to Tunbridge Wells (home of "Disgusted") to do [fear]Christmas Mark I[/fear] with a whole bundle of people.

The forecast says it's going to snow. Hopefully that won't bugger up the trains. Once I'm safely in TW though, I intend to start offering sacrifices in the hope that the Almighty Snow Demons will bestow their gifts upon us :o)

*bounce* SNOW! *bounce*

Well, I managed to fight off the lurgy about a week ago. This was rather lucky, as it meant I was able to join [livejournal.com profile] kaickul and many others on the mass UGC CineWorld trip to see Night Watch and Serenity, without coughing my guts up all the way through the films and annoying everyone.

Night Watch was very moody and stylish, but it seemed to be lacking something - I think that "something" may have been a plot. It's slightly worrying when the most memorable aspect of a film is its subtitles (although, to be fair, they were great subtitles!). Still, I liked it enough to want to see the sequels when they arrive.

Serenity was ace, classic Joss Whedon stuff all the way. Although for some reason it sparked off a massive anti-George Lucas rant in the restaurant beforehand. Not sure why. I've never understood the mentality of "This film's great, so by extension this other film in a similar genre must be shit." Serenity rocked. Episode III rocked. End of story, as far as I'm concerned. There's plenty of room for both of them on my DVD shelf.

Went to Mickey's birthday party in the evening, at which point geeky interesting, in-depth film conversations continued, occasionally interrupted by geeky nostalgic chat about music, computer games, and the arrival of the Densest Chocolate Cake Known To Mankind. Mmmmmm...

Good party :o)

Sunday, by comparison, I spent mostly asleep. And making some slow progress through Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. I've still got more than half of it to go, though! Should I be worried that a trip to the pictures and a birthday party tires me out so much that I want to do absolutely nothing the next day? I blame it on the last vestiges of the lurgy. Either that, or I'm getting old...

Work has been a little odd this week. Owing to the general crappitude of other teams backlogs in other parts of the business, everyone on my team has been doing another area of work. Everyone except me, that is. I've got the lovely job of keeping an eye on everyone else's normal work while they do the other stuff. Yep, I'm keeping an eye on it. Yep, it's still there. Yep, it's getting bigger. ;o)

Went round to [livejournal.com profile] soul_rider and [livejournal.com profile] longhairedhippy's on Thursday as usual for Chinese food, although almost none of the usual crowd were around. This did at least give me the opportunity to monopolise time with Evie, who spent a large chunk of the evening curled up asleep on my chest. She was being very cute. Oh no, I don't get broody. Not at all...

Yesterday evening was, naturally, spent at the HH, although there were a few of the usual suspects missing from there too. Anyone know where [livejournal.com profile] bonedancer got to?

Given that my job is presently in a state of extreme dullness and pointlessness, and that I've been meaning to visit my folks for a while, I've taken next week off, so I won't really be around much as I'll be off daarn saarf for most of it. Should still be back in time to see you all in t'pub on Friday, though! :o)
rich_jacko: (Default)
Boss gets back in the office tomorrow.

"I don't care what happens while I'm gone," she said, "so long as you keep the outstanding figure under 300."

So, after three weeks of keeping it steady around the 250 mark, today (of course) it shot up to 310 cases...

What else was I going to post? Oh yeah, the Enterprise finale:

<comic book guy>Worst - episode - ever!</comic book guy>

What was the point of all that Riker crap? And don't you just hate it when a series goes and kills off a major character for no good reason, just because it's the last episode? And does anyone care? Was anybody else still watching it anyway...?

Hey, I can make my "mood dragon" do funny animations by playing with the scroll wheel on my mouse! :o)

Okay, I admit it. I'm bored. I'll go now...
