Overall I think I will look back on 2011 as a year in which I spent an awful lot of money, but spent it well. After a long, long wait I bought and furnished a house. I went on two enjoyable holidays (to Flamborough and to Cologne), had a fab party weekend away in Hartington, and made several visits to London.

In less-expensive news several friends had babies, I became a godfather, and my sister is expecting her third (and - she swears - final!) child. A close friend coped amazingly well with cancer. We discovered a great new Friday social venue in The Blake, and had several hiccups with the Walkley Cottage. Work was busy but mostly more of the same - no more promotions on the horizon for a while. I succumbed to the evils of Facebook but made up for it by also reading more books than usual. Movies were mostly good but Doctor Who was disappointing. Cake was not disappointing on many, many occasions. The weather was hot and sunny surprisingly often. There wasn't nearly enough snow.

My New Year's resolution is kind of dull - I'm aiming to get up earlier and get into work earlier on a regular basis. This will give me more time to play in the evenings, in theory at least!

Best wishes for 2012 everyone! :o)

Just been away for an unbelievably hot and sunny weekend in London.

[livejournal.com profile] edy_ and I went to the British Museum to see the "Treasures of Heaven" exhibition. There was an impressive amount of really amazing stuff, although there's only so many fragments of the True Cross / bits of the Crown of Thorns you can see in one place before you get a bit jaded ;o) The Reading Room had been lit and filled with music to create a cathedral-esque atmosphere, which was a nice touch.

The exhibit took over two hours, leaving just enough time for a quick whistle-stop tour of the museum's other greatest hits (Rosetta Stone? Check. Elgin Marbles? Check? Lewis Chessmen? Check - five minutes before closing time!). Then we met up with [livejournal.com profile] springmaker and Mel for dinner at a fab Belgian restaurant near Covent Garden, where we were spoilt for choice by the food menu, and even more by the beer menu. After dinner we had a pleasant evening walk down to the Thames before heading back to the blissful air-conditioning of our hotel.

On Sunday we split up and went our separate ways. As the weather was still incredible, I took an impromptu boat trip down the Thames, from Westminster to Greenwich. I wandered round Greenwich for a bit, finding the Observatory and the Meridian Line, then caught the train back to Charing Cross.

Then I visited the London Film Museum, which I wanted to go to for the current Ray Harryhausen exhibition. That exhibition was great, and there was some interesting stuff in the rest of the museum, but it was quite small and I was done in an hour and a half. Possibly it's bigger when it isn't disrupted due to Danny Boyle filming there (although that did mean I got compensatory postcards).

I had a late lunch in Trafalgar Square and sat with my feet in the fountain - soooo nice! - before meeting up with [livejournal.com profile] edy_ back at St Pancras and promptly splitting up again due to a packed train home. It was raining when we got back.

P.S. - Doctor Who? Worst. Season finale. Ever. And that includes The Twin Dilemma ;op

Oh yeah, now the sun comes out, several hours too late!

Can I have the moon and clouds in front of the sun separately please, not both at the same time and then neither :o(

This morning I was paddling in the sea as I watched the sunrise over Llandudno Bay. Now I'm back in Sheffield and it keeps drizzling. Bah!

The wedding was a fantastic day and the holiday as a whole was really enjoyable. I'll do a full post in a day or two, once I've had time to sort through my many, many, many photos :o)

For now I just wanted to mention that some of us are definitely going to the Walkley Cottage for a SFS this Friday - Please come and join us!

I think I got even wetter on the way home today than I did going to the pub last Friday. At least this time I could get properly dried, into my dressing gown, and help myself to as much tea and chocolate as I liked :o)

Half the roads were closed and there was virtually no public transport. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Much as I love this city, it's absolutely rubbish when it comes to coping with any sort of weather.

Win!

A glorious sunny day for sitting outside and having lunch.

Steak pie, chips, peas, a pint of real ale, and fiddypee change all from a fiver.

I love the Harlequin :o)

Yuk! It's a bit grim this morning, isn't it? I think the weather might have finally killed off my brolly.

Mind you, it did mean I got into work early(er) than usual as I took the tram - and got a free journey too owing to packed-ness :o)

Drying off now. One of my colleagues bought new trousers on the way in just so she can change into something dry!

EDIT: Of course, it looks glorious out there now, when I'm inside for the rest of the day...

The phones came back on at some point overnight. Still no power, although the lights on in the distance seem to be creeping ever closer to Chez Rich.

Huge thanks to [livejournal.com profile] longhairedhippy and [livejournal.com profile] soul_rider for letting me use their fridge space and their shower, and feeding me stew and dumplings last night :o)

It was good to see so many people yesterday evening, but sad that it was because we were all refugees. I hope no one's suffered too much or had anything at home damaged. Let's hope for a dry day and for things to get back to normal again soon!

I was going to post something about bloody northerners knowing nothing about proper floods, and about this city being generally rubbish and falling to pieces whenever there's the slightest hint of real weather. But having finally got back to an interweb connection (no power at home) and seen the photos on the News, I'll grudgingly admit that the floods are quite impressive. I suppose.

I had a meeting in London yesterday. There was a small river that I think was meant to be a train track on the way down. We caught the 2pm train back from London. And very nearly spent the night in Derby. Oh, with no hotel rooms left in the city BTW.

There were no trains running north of Derby. Apparently the lines were all flooded.

There were no buses or taxis running north of Derby. Apparently the roads were all blocked or gridlocked.

So R#, J#, J# and I set up camp in a nearby pub for a bit. Then checked again at the station. Nothing running.

We couldn't help but notice there was barely a drizzle and Derby's roads and rail lines were all clear......

So we went back to the pub for another pint. Then checked again at the station. Nothing running.

So we went for food (Mmmm, Nandos......). Then checked again at the station. And eventually found a taxi willing to take us all home.

Once we did that, it was pretty smooth sailing. No blocked roads, no flooding that we could see. No gridlock until after I got out the taxi in Sheffield city centre. Hence my scepticism about this supposedly biblical event that had brought South Yorkshire to a standstill.

Anyway, the traffic being gridlocked for no discernable reason from Brook Hill roundabout up to Hillsborough Corner (where, okay, the weir was a bit high), I eventually got home to a darkened house at about quarter to eleven.

But hey, my flexi credit is now amazing! ;o)
